What it is: This hardcover book features more than 400 vehicles with detailed specifications and 1,200 photographs of over 400 tanks and armored fighting vehicles.

Brain Benefits: attention, visual processing, sound blending, segmenting, memory

What I love: Of all the gadgets, gizmos and games we purchased for our 13-year-old son this Christmas, this was his favorite gift! He loves learning about history, especially tanks and planes, and even though I wouldn’t describe him as an avid reader, this hardcover book was so chock full of photos that the text wasn’t intimidating. Outside of schoolwork, he hasn’t read this much in months! From weight and performance to armament and timeframes, this book provides every detail a tank-lover could want—with images to complement the descriptions. My son is constantly updating me about what he reads, describing the pros and cons of turrets, why some armor was better than others, and how he’d improve on the design. This is a great encyclopedia for older kids, teens and adults that provides a detailed look at the historical and technical designs of vehicles.

What I would change: The text is a bit small, which may put some eye strain on those with challenged vision.
